Horntails take part in Whiteknights V

The Horntail Strikers recently attended the Whiteknights V tournament, hosted by the Reading Rocs Quidditch Team across the weekend of 22nd – 23rd April 2017.

With a reduced roster of 9 players, the Strikers took on the Oxford Quidlings and Exeter Eagles on their first day, with an impressive 120* – 60 win against the Quidlings.

Sunday saw the Horntails play the Nottingham Nightmares, who ultimately saw the Strikers out of the tournament. Despite keeping the score close on quaffle for the majority of the game, the Nightmares shot ahead after the snitch was released.

Whiteknights V was the tournament debut of Striker Imke Stoffijn, who joined the team in February. Imke scored two goals across the weekend and proved to be invaluable on pitch – taking on new roles such as seeking as well as utilising her skills as both a chaser and beater.

“I really enjoyed Whiteknights!” enthuses Imke. “We played some really good games – everyone was so driven to play. The friendlies showed to me what makes quidditch such a nice sport – that everyone really wanted to play with and against other teams to enjoy the game.”

Strikers Coach Jack Latoy says the tournament has benefited both new and experienced team members, and was a learning experience for all.

“Whiteknights 5 was a fantastic tournament for the Portsmouth side, presenting an opportunity to play against old friends and new teams alike in a fun yet competitive setting,” says Jack. “The team played with pace and passion despite a depleted roster to positively round off an excellent year of quidditch following Portsmouth’s first victory at Whiteknights 4.”

Portsmouth Quidditch qualifies for British Quidditch Cup

After some stunning plays, hard work, and inspiring determination displayed by the Horntail Strikers at Southern Cup 2016, not only did the team achieve upper-bracket status but also qualified for the British Quidditch Cup!

Hosted in Southampton, Southern Cup saw the Strikers play the two finalists across the two day tournament, Warwick and Werewolves, as well as matches against the Oxford Quidlings and Brizzlebees.

In addition to catching the snitch in all four of their games, the team boasts the only snitch catch against  Warwick of the tournament.

The team is now training hard, and looking forward to BQC this March.
